The beginning of the 20th century was an exciting time for the automotive industry. Visionaries were building exceptional and unique cars following their intuition and basic knowledge of mechanics, using iron, brass, wood, and rubber. Out of this, Carl Benz built an engine that let the legendary driver Robert Burman push the Blitzen Benz to 228,1 km/h. It was a real breakthrough.

The period between the two World Wars was an exciting time for motorists. An era of engineering innovation, glamour and intense rivalry between manufacturers. The congestion-free roads and lack of speed cameras didn't hurt either!
The cars were both beautiful and simple — a huge part of their appeal today. And they went fast. It's a testament to the engineering integrity and build quality that a lot of these cars are still being raced today.

Racing in the 1930s was dominated by the German “Silver Arrows,” so called because the polished metal was left unpainted to reduce weight. The Silver Arrows knocked their British adversaries of the 20s out of pole position.
From a technical point of view, the Mercedes Benz W125 Silver Arrow of 1937 was the perfect race car of its era, its V-8 engine providing 595 horsepower, reaching up to 300 km/h.
These cars were the world's most powerful race cars till the 1960s. On 28 January 1938 a modified version of the W125 set the world speed record (432 kph), and held it until 2017.

In the 1940s the world was more interested in tanks than race cars, and only a few new cars were made. But there were still some unique creations. The Talbot-Lago T26C, a true masterpiece of the era, could finish a whole race track on just one tank of fuel, leaving the Ferraris and Maseratis racing to catch up.

The 1950s were a period of massive change. After World War Two, a new generation pushed the boundaries in technology, engineering, and design.
Cars were transformed, almost overnight. Aesthetics became as important as mechanics, leading to a truly golden era of extraordinarily beautiful cars. The prime example is the Jaguar D-Type, arguably the most elegant, and design-driven vehicle produced in the 1950s.
During the beginning stages of this project, I trawled the internet for as many reference photos of the car as possible, as well as viewing as much historic film of the D-Type, specifically whilst racing. Before I embarked on an automotive CGI image, I thoroughly enjoyed the research that goes into it, constantly striving to understand what was going through the minds of the cars designers, owners and drivers.
I chose the Jaguar D-Type as I believe it's arguably the most elegant, and design driven vehicle produced in the 1950s. To emphasize the shape and lines of the Jaguar, without distraction from a busy scene, I chose a solitary, pit-lane environment.

The 60s are famous as a period of beautiful design. In the automotive industry, rounded shapes dominated. The cars of this era have a retro look, but at the same time, there is something futuristic in their design. This is evident in the 1962 Chevrolet Corvette, one of the most legendary cars in racing history.

In the 1970s aerodynamics developed enormously. Compared to the racing cars from earlier years, big steps were made. The Porsche 917, with its roots in the 30s, is a clear example of this.
Few brands that have a stronger appeal than Porsche. The philosophy, the appearance, even the sound design. In the early 70s, Porsche scored their first victories in the 24h race in Le Mans with the 917. The car was designed to fast, but also to catch the eye, especially in the “Team Salzburg” livery...

In the 1980s design and technology went hand in hand influencing a trend towards a formal minimalism. As the decade wore on, boxy hard edges slowly rounded off to the smoother liquid shapes synonymous with the early 90's.
The BMW M1 Procar is illustrative of this trend, coming from a great period filled with nostalgia and heroic automotive figures both in and out of the racing seat. Names like Nelson Piquet, Nikki Lauda, Alain Prost, James Hunt, Tiff Needell, Mario Andretti… The list goes on.

The transition from boxy, square cars to sleek, curved super/hyper cars made the 1990s one of the most iconic times for super cars.
The McLaren F1 GTR, a pure racetrack car, is surely one of the most iconic cars of all time. It was the standout car at the 1995 LeMans, where nobody expected it to win.

Japanese car culture came to the fore in the 2000s, with computer games with Gran Turismo introducing a new generation to the cars of the era.
One of the most iconic cars was the Nissan Skyliner, the race car version from the JGTC, rocking the all yellow Pennzoil scheme.

In the last couple of decades, cars have tended to become more similar. The Aston Martin Vulcan bucks that trend. It's a bold statement, to say the least.
I chose Goodwood. British brand, british track, perfect match. Goodwood is very famous. There is, for example, the legendary hill climb event, in which great - sometimes also retired - racing legends attend. And it is not the "usual racetrack", because it IS history. It combines pretty much what we are doing with this project. What's more, it has a very special aura, similar to the old Nürburgring. A big help was the generosity of Gunnar Frei, who created this track as a video game asset. It was incredibly nice of him to share his data with me, so I could use it more like a photographer and even 'scout locations'. Special thanks to you, Gunnar, and a big praise to your amazing work on that track. Check his work here: here
To finally pour all digital and real things together, in 2018 exactly this model was part of the show at Goodwood.

We are right at the beginning of the 2020s, so this decade's history has not been written yet. But the EVO is a very good start. For 2020 they have announced a facelift for the Gen2 car called the Gen2 EVO. Because of COVID-19, the facelift will be introduced in 2021.

Humbleteam is proud to present The Race Car Project, an independent collaboration of 12 CGI artists from different countries who joined forces in the pandemic to create a tribute to some of the most iconic race cars of the last 120 years.
